2026 so far: 9 outbreaks posted by the CDC, 5 caused by norovirus; the most recent on National Geographic Sea Bird (7/15/2026 – 7/20/2026). 64 outbreaks from 2023 to 2026. The CDC posts an outbreak when a ship in its jurisdiction has 3% or more of passengers or crew reporting gastrointestinal symptoms to the ship’s medical staff, and “may also post other outbreaks of public health significance”.

An outbreak is not the same as a failed inspection: the inspection score measures sanitation on the day of the inspection; an outbreak counts people who got sick on one voyage. Illnesses such as norovirus “can spread quickly in closed and semienclosed environments, such as cruise ships” (CDC FAQ).
